HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT YOUR FURNACE OR BOILER
- Check the thermostat and see whether it is set to at least five degrees above the current temperature inside your home, and that it is set to “heat.” If it isn’t, adjust accordingly and see if the heating system turns on. If not, proceed to the next step.
- Check your propane or heating oil tank gauge. If your tank is less than a quarter full for propane or an eighth full for heating oil, Call Taylor Energy right away at (860) 623-3308 for round-the-clock emergency fuel delivery.
- Check the circuit box to see if your heating system’s circuit was tripped. If it was, turn it back on and see if that works. If not, move on to the next step.
- If you have a steam boiler, check that the water level in the gauge is at least half full. If it isn’t, call us. We provide 24-hour no-heat emergency service. If your water level is more than half full, skip ahead to Step 6.
- If you have a furnace, check the red “START” switch for it. The switch is part of a safety system that shuts down your system if it thinks that the burner flame has gone out. This can occur, however, even if the burner flame is still on. If the switch is off, turn it on to see if your furnace will turn back on. If not, go to the next step.
- Turn your thermostat up at least another five degrees. Find the button on your furnace or boiler that is clearly labeled “RESET.” Push and hold the reset button for 30 seconds and see if this starts your system. Only do this ONCE. Doing it again can seriously damage your heating system. If this doesn’t work, call us for no-heat emergency service.
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT YOUR CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING
If your home’s air conditioning is running but not blowing cool air into your home, the situation may not need a service call. Try these steps before contacting us:
- Make sure your thermostat is properly set to “cool” or “air conditioning.”
- Do a check around your home to see if your vents are blocked by furniture, curtains or other obstructions.
- Check your outdoor unit (the condenser) to see if the fan is running. If it isn’t:
- Check for a power switch on the unit itself.
- Check your circuit breakers.
- TURN OFF THE POWER, then check for debris inside the condenser unit.
- Check the indoor unit:
- Make sure all power switches for the air conditioning system are on.
- Inspect the air filters. Be sure to clean or replace clogged ones according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If these do not work, contact us for a service call.
